The Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, founded in 1909, soon felt the need for a base in the Holy Land where students and faculty of the Institute could further their studies with a particular focus on the geography, history and archaeology of the Holy Land. The project stated in 1913, with the first “carovana”, while the current campus was built between 1925 and 1927, and is also the main home of the Jesuits in the Holy Land, serving also our wider mission.
Since May 2024, the Pontifical Biblical Institute (including the branch in Jerusalem) and the Pontifical Oriental Institute, alongside the Collegium Maximum, have merged to become the Pontifical Gregorian University, with its three missions.
The PBI Jerusalem continues to serve as a study centre in Jerusalem, offering courses for students of for the Pontifical Gregorian University, as well as formation programmes for members of the Society of Jesus.
Our Jerusalem campus also has a library and a museum.
