The Egyptian collection

Most of our visitors come to see the mummy. Not just any mummy, but the mummy, as it is the only mummy present in any Museum in Israel. No wonder, that he has been the protagonist of a number of exhibitions and as recently as 2016-2017 has been the star of an exhibition at the Israel Museum entitled A Mummy in Jerusalem: Secrets of the Afterlife.

However, our Egyptian collection goes beyond the mummy itself, and includes a number of quite interesting material, right from prehistory – including the Palaeolithic, through to the late Egyptian Coptic material.

Due to constraints of space – our Museum also doubles up as a lecture hall – things are not often displayed in the most logical order. This guide will therefore try to guide through our collection, moving you from one showcase to the next …

  • In the inner room:
    • [E1] Egyptian mummy with coffin and [E2] coffin lid
    • [E3] Prehistoric Egypt: pottery from pre-Dynastic Egypt, prehistorical arrowheads and stone implements.
    • [E4] Various artefacts: figurative art, alabaster vessels.
  • In the main hall:
    • [E5] Axe Head of Khufu. Old Kingdom.
    • [E6] Various artefacts: stone palettes, statuettes of Egyptian gods, and shabtis
    • [E7] Glyptic art. Amulets and scarabs.
