How to make a mummy

Today, I thought I should share something for our younger visitors. As you may imagine, they’re always fascinated by our mummy, and can hardly wait until we lift the cloth over the glass case [1] … and have loads of questions to ask!

As I wrote in an earlier post (The man behind the mask), recent research in our mummy has confirmed that Yarat Hor-Ru was mummified in a traditional Egyptian way.

But how did the Egyptians mummify their dead? A good place to start (and a fun one for the kids) is this video from TedEd [2].

Notes:

[1] We cover the glass case with a thick dark cloth for conservation reasons, as it is a simple and effective way to reduce the light which, long term, damages paint and textiles.

[2] First came across this at last year’s exhibition, with Hebrew subtitles. Will also post that version once I find it …
